John Keats lived
and died in this small room at the corner
of the building. The
two windows look out on the Piazza and
the Scalinata.
Until Keats became
too ill to leave his bed, the views from
the windows
were a constant distraction and delight:
Bernini’s marble boat-shaped fountain
with its lion heads at prow and stern,
the artist’s models reclining on
the steps, occasional flocks of goats,
the busy workshops of mosaic-makers, engravers
and sculptors.
Severn warmed their
food in the fireplace, which is original
as
is the painted ceiling.
